Marriage assistance disbursed
. Tuticorin: P. Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Social Welfare, disbursed marriage assistance to the tune of Rs.5.25 lakh to 35 beneficiaries with each getting Rs.15,000 here on Sunday.
Another batch of 292 beneficiaries received Rs.20,000 each as marriage assistance under the same scheme.
Five beneficiaries received a sum of Rs.20, 000 each under the Anjugam Ammaiyar inter-caste marriage scheme.
In total, a sum of Rs.64.65 lakh was extended to 332 beneficiaries in the district.
She said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi provided marriage assistance of Rs.5, 000 to eligible beneficiaries in 1989 and increased it to Rs.10, 000 in 1996 and later the amount was raised to Rs.15, 000 in 2006 when he returned to power for the fifth time. More importantly, in March last the financial assistance under marriage scheme was increased to Rs.20,000, she said.
The number of beneficiaries ceiling of amount was not fixed by the government and therefore she asked the eligible people concerned to avail themselves of the opportunity. R. Kasthuri Thangam, Mayor of Tuticorin and P. Muthunayagam, District Social Welfare Officer, were present.

The decision to enhance the incentive was taken at the meeting of the Scheduled Caste Advisory Board, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday.
